The Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock (CIEL), is the UK’s livestock innovation Centre and one of the 4 UK Agri-Tech Centres of agricultural innovation.
These Centres are a unique collaboration between Government, academia, and industry to drive greater efficiency and resilience across the agrifood sector.
In collaboration with 12 of the UK’s leading livestock research institutions (highlighted in the graphic below) and supported by Innovate UK, CIEL has significantly invested in world leading capabilities, to strengthen the UK’s capacity for livestock related research and drive forward new ideas, innovation and technology.
Academic expertise covers all major species of the livestock industry (dairy, beef, sheep, pigs and poultry).
Our network
The CIEL network, in addition to its research partners, spans the livestock supply chain, with a growing membership base across industry. CIEL brings partners together and provides the front door to collaborative research.
Our research capabilities
A unique production-scale research facility for the pig industry, enabling comparative trials between indoor and outdoor systems covering precision nutrition and physiological, environmental, health, behaviour & welfare parameters.
78ha Precision Grassland Platform for detailed studies of the grazing environment to optimise the use of grassland in dairy and beef production systems and drive improvements in productivity and environmental sustainability.
The world leading North Wyke Farm Platform assesses the sustainability of farming systems and management interventions at scale. Every relevant input from fertiliser to manpower, and all key outputs, including pollutants in runoff from fields, greenhouse gases, and ultimately profits, can be monitored.
An award-winning dairy science research facility at the forefront of research into the health, nutrition and welfare of dairy cows and calves. Principles features include a nutritional research unit, flexible housing unit, a dedicated youngstock unit, and Category 2 containment facility.
The UK’s largest facility to improve avian nutrition, health and welfare able to accommodate scientifically sound replicated trials all the way from small-scale pilots through to testing ideas under near commercial conditions.
The unparalleled Large Animal Research and Imaging Facility (LARIF) providing multi-disciplinary expertise in farm animal production, health and welfare – including infectious diseases and zoonoses, vaccines, genetics and genome editing, imaging, radiology, medicine, surgery and critical care.
Digital imaging and AI capability developing the latest sensor-based and automated technologies to support precision livestock farming and enhance the performance, health and welfare of livestock.
A dedicated plasma research facility for the agrifood industry, focusing on potential uses of the antimicrobial properties of cold plasma for livestock healthcare and biosecurity, food hygiene and shelf-life extension.

In conjunction with the network, CIEL brings together all the necessary elements for conducting research, simplifying the process, and speeding up the translation of new ideas into products and services.
Understanding the types and sources of R&D funding is important, and CIEL supports Members by providing a grant notification service via monthly newsletters as well as more targeted searches for specific project needs. The CIEL team can help form a consortium of relevant partners and capability and jointly prepare a comprehensive application for funding, managing the writing and submission process throughout.
